Chook with hardly any feathers

Post by Kirstych »

Hi all, we have four chooks and one of them has been loosing her feathers to the point where she’s got hardly any left. She doesn’t normally moult this heavily and It’s been about 7 weeks at a guess. The rest of our chooks look healthy and fluffy. Is this just normal moulting or could it be something else?

Hi Kirsty and welcome to PC.

The faster a hen moults the shorter her break from laying. Some hens just drop their whole feather costume at once. It looks worrying but if she lives in a warm dry house it shouldn't be a problem.

Shaft mites can cause feathers to fall out but it usually starts around the neck area and not just one bird is affected. It's the right time of year for moulting so I would hope it's that and she'll look as good as new soon.
