Anyone raised partridges before?
I have 6 red legged partridges that I hatched myself. They're now fully grown and I am figuring out their sexes. Google tells me to check the spurs on the legs and the ones with two spurs and generally bigger than the others should be males. On this basis, 4 out of 6 could be males - help! I also no...

Gold laced Orpingtons
I seem to have accidentally created a line of Orpingtons (only roosters so far) that are gold/buff and with a lot of lacing mainly on their chests. I am assuming these originated from my one buff hen and my blue rooster (a lot of brown in him). The boys start being mainly buff/gold/brown and as they...

Re: Too many broodies!
I've just come home from overseas today and found one of my girls sitting too! I know it's been rather warm lately but!! Only on 7 eggs thank goodness. Oh dear - what to do. I'll probably let her sit it out and see if any are fertile. At least she's very obliging and is sitting inside a small hutch ...

Re: Chicken crusty growth to foot
Looks like it could just be hard dried chicken poo? Feathered feet could definitely pick up lots of poo and debris. And not bumblefoot - this occurs on the bottom of the foot and is usually a black scab in the centre of the pad of the foot. She might have that as well though if she is limping, or th...

Re: TURKEYS/ Ducks other.
Hi there. I have 2 female turkeys, bronze and white, but have had more in the past. I have hatched turkeys in my incubators and find them the easiest birds to hatch. I'm quite keen to get some of the royal palm turkeys one day as they look beautiful.

Re: North Auckland Chook Chat
Me too! I have a couple of trips planned but am free between 14/5 and 14/7 so would love to come if that suits. A nice change to go up north! Anyone who wants to come here to Coatesville and get a ride up with me is fine with me.
Thanks for suggesting eae.

Re: Moulting Chooks
I'm afraid it got worse for my turkey! The third and hopefully the last of these embarrassing photos............ Sorry if I'm boring anyone but it's the worst moulting bird I've had! Even the tops of her legs are pincushions! http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q637/tishie163/IMG_0796_zps2kulerad.jpg

I have feathers everywhere too! My poor bronze turkey has just decided to stop being broody and drop all her feathers too!
Here she is! She's a mess!

Re: Too many broodies!
Well I tried putting blocks of wood in the nest boxes but the broodies just sat on top of them! So then I just decided to block off the chook house totally during the day and only let them all in at night. That cured them straight away thank goodness - nowhere nice dark and cosy to nestle down in. B...

Too many broodies!
At the moment I've got THREE broody hens! They are very determined but I am also very determined they are not getting any eggs to sit on! It's the wrong end of the season girls........... This is the most broody hens I've had for years. Is it this hot and muggy weather that's setting them off?? Anyo...
