Re: My brahma cockerel's foot problems
His foot does look a bit scaley - we've got a product in NZ called 'Poultry Leg Spray' (originates from PoultryNZ) - it says it contains a mixture of 'Cotton seed oil and Eucalyptus' - it does clear up the scaley leg mites, but I think it also helps to condition and moisturise the scales (they seem ...

Re: More fluff balls
we've had a few fluffies wander out - how about 14 Muscovy babies? anyone?? http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/MillyMumMoon/DSC02284a.jpg and that was after these ones arrived (several mothers, bit of a mixed bag!) http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/MillyMumMoon/DSC02286a.jpg

Re: Straw vs wood shavings
if you're going to put down a sheet of vinyl, I'd be tempted to empty some flea powder (pyrethrin) underneath it - it won't last forever, but will hold the mites off for a while the other thing I did was when I was double lining some kennels (and one of the chook houses) I bought some flea collars (...

Re: Missing pieces
I had a Pekin bantam cockerel like this - I hadn't picked it up as a little chick, then they get all fluffy and didn't notice it until I sorted through them & thought, don't need 4 cockerels of the same colour, so who should I keep. To discover one was completely missing its wing! It obviously h...

Re: Anyone had a chook with a popping hip?
not seen or heard that before!
nice idea with the vetwrap, but its generally very hard to get it to stay in place and to not have her bothered by it (I've only ever used it on ducks with a wonky wing & they generally throw it off as soon as I walked away!)

Re: Partridge Wyandotte
oh, I should say - you typically only find the colouring of Partridge in the bantam size (unless someone has been working on getting this colour in the full sized Wyandotte)
did you want bantams? or the large Wyandotte's?

Re: Partridge Wyandotte
The current APPA club president - Robert Kern - keeps Wyandotte bantams, think he has Partridge - he's up past Kumeu, long way past up that peninsula if you search on facebook for the Auckland Poultry & Pigeon Assoc - post a question on there, Robert should see it - he's a little busy building a...

Re: Found eggs are they good
oh, before you start cracking any of the eggs, they have to pass the sniff test (I find rotten duck eggs are obvious, dodgey chickens aren't so, so the sniff test just eliminates the really bad ones)

Re: Found eggs are they good
my general rule of thumb - take what looks like the dirtiest couple of eggs (presumably the oldest) & crack them open (suggest outside, where if it explodes, will be easily cleaned up or is out of the way) gently tap the egg, if the crack doesn't create an indentation, or worse, the crack expand...
