Re: More mites on polish chook.can I bath her??
If you can't pinpoint where they live you'll have to clean the whole house out - dirt and all, and also the nesting boxes and the nesting material. Once it's bare you have several options: Ripcord is a chemical that is sprayed onto all walls and the ceiling but it's something that can only be done ...
Re: Sad
So sorry to hear It maddens me to hear that (probably) a dog has had the opportunity to do this. Sounds most likely a dog attack to me. In the second attack at our place we had feathers all over the place. I was expecting dead bodies, but eventually found live chooks - I guess what I'm saying is hop...

Re: Chickens do not read manuals; pretty chick pics
The main danger for them at this time of the year is getting stuck somewhere and getting cold and/or wet. Mum can certainly cover them well enough if they're with her.
Mum is of no particular breed, similar size to a brown shaver. Dad is also some sort of heavy breed sized mongrel.

Re: Hi,adding another rooster to flock
Thanks for that seatil. That picture of a chook on the right hand side of your email,is that one of yours,if so,what is it please. That gorgeous chook is called Rae. She's a silver spangled hamburg and is an absolute pain in the posterior! Absolutely stunning looker though, gets a lot of comments f...

Re: Hi,adding another rooster to flock
I've got multiple roosters in each group of chooks; 2 in one group, 4 in another and 2 in a third group. They have heaps of space though - probably around 500sq.m each group, plenty of ways to get out of sight of one another, multiple potential sleeping locations, and the newcomers were always babie...

Re: Chickens do not read manuals; pretty chick pics
hopefully with a non-electric broody you'll be okay - I've hatched a few late ones here & we had a mishap with the power supply and they went one night without power - they still don't look right and that was over a week ago now note to self, don't hatch anything this late next year! That remin...

Chickens do not read manuals; pretty chick pics
May is a terrible time to have chicks, even up here in the winterless north. Chuck stole away into the bushes three weeks ago to sit on a secret stash of eggs. Friday she came out with these: http://chez.geek.nz/chooks/IMG_0001.jpg http://chez.geek.nz/chooks/IMG_0002.jpg 13 from 15. And they are all...

Re: Too many broodies!
Anyone else got a broody sitting now? Finally located the hen I suspected was broody - sitting on about 15 eggs right under our noses. It's amazing how easily they hide in plain sight sometimes. Here's hoping for some healthy chicks in 7-10 days time. Might make up for the near complete lack of eggs...

Re: Last chicks of the season
Pullet:rooster ratio looking better than mine! Out of 50 chicks, I had 19 girls (one of which got tangled in a net, and two did death by poisoning) and 31 roosters. New policy is all unsexed and female chicks get to enjoy the creature comforts of the walk-in pen. Only the obvious roosters get to fre...

Re: Chicken paralysed - what to do with her chicks?
Putting head to the ground and fluffing up when you approach is clucky behaviour. Most likely she's feeling disturbed from the move - her nest isn't in the right place, doesn't have the right stuff in it, etc. If I have to move a broody during daylight hours it's straight into a darkened area with a...

Re: Chicken paralysed - what to do with her chicks?
Hopefully everyone got through the night OK (including yourself!) A bendable or anglepoise desk lamp with an old-school 40W or 60W bulb will do the job. Perhaps someone you know locally has something like this? Failing that, The Warehouse should now be open (or will be in 15 minutes) and they have $...

Re: Chicken seems paralysed?
Personally, I would take the chicks off her and get them somewhere safe and warm. Ideally with a heat lamp (old style light bulb 40-60W will do), but since they're over a week old they should manage ok indoors without if it's 20-25C. Linen cupboard may be a great overnight option if you don't have a...

Re: Moulting Chooks
Poor turkey! Our hens that didn't moult mid-summer have started moulting en masse now. Clouds of feathers everywhere. I really should take a picture of baldilocks - named because she's been walking with a bald head and rooster damaged wing feathers all summer - she's started actually moulting on top...
