Quails & Chooks

Postby Sammy77 » Tue Sep 24, 2013 5:04 pm

Apologies if this has already been asked ( I did a search and couldn't find anything). I have kept chooks for a while now and I am interested in getting some quails too. Can quails and chooks share the same coop or do you have to keep them completely separated? I have looked on the Internet and of course some people agree and other people think it is not a good idea. It helps if you get a specialised forum like this so that you can draw on actual experiences as opposed to just opinion.
Thanks for looking :D

Hi Sammy and welcome to PC :D

I wouldn't keep them together unless you have tiny chooks like Rosecombs, Japanese or Sebright. Quail are flighty - they need to be enclosed on all sides plus top. They're only a small bird and larger chooks would probably do damage to them.

Hi - I have actually hatchen both chickens and quail out and kept them together very successfully from the start. If anything the quail are quieter and less flighty whilst with the chickens, once I parted them at about 6 weeks of age the quail became quite flighty, but in answer to your question- yes you can.

Marina is right - you do need to keep them with smaller chickens if you are going to do that, mine were Sebrights, Slver spangled Hamburgs, gold pencilled hamburgs and Araucanas mixed with the quail, mine were the red mutant quail and Californian quail varieties.
