2 roosters wanting to mate quite often

Postby April » Sat Jun 10, 2017 1:31 pm

I have got 2 roosters now, should have stuck to 1,but,they are both after the hens during the day
wanting to mate.1 more so than the other. Both are fairly big boys so I keep them away from my 3 smallest girls.
What I want to know is do they want a nookie quite often or what?
Seems to be all they think about,is it normal for roosters to be like that.
1 has got a mate that he came with, but he seems to like the other girls better.
(sounds a bit like some people)
Any help appreciated.Thanks. ;)

Sounds pretty normal! I have a 5 year old boy who's a bit slow now and a 6 month old boy. The younger one has just discovered he's got hormones and is chasing the girls all the time! They are not happy at all - screeching every time he grabs them by the neck and tries to do his thing. The older boy seems quite insulted by the young one chasing HIS girls and it has reminded him to do some chasing too!

Trouble is with some roosters they can fight quite bitterly when the breeding season comes. My older boy has lost his sight in one eye from fighting and they have often had bleeding combs in the past. I probably will have to sell the younger boy in Spring. I only have 8 hens and 2 roos so the boys don't have enough hens each to be satisfied! So hopefully your boys don't fight too much over the hens. If you have a higher ratio of hens to roosters you might be OK.

They are both under a year old.One can't cock a doodle do properly yet.
I've got 7 girls,I think it sounds worse than it is when they jump them.
One rooster came and hid in the bedroom today to get away from the other rooster.
I am just hoping they calm down a bit sooner than later.
I don't want to get rid of one.he is one of a araucana breeding pair, and I like the
other one who is usually more of a gentleman.

Breeding season is almost the whole year ! Especially with light breeds.
Maybe get a few more Araucana hens and keep them separated with the Araucana rooster?

I might just have to keep them separated for a while.
Don't really want to get more chooks at the moment.Anybody out there want to buy rooster and hen and live
near Kaitaia. :D
