How quickly they change!

Postby Chico66 » Thu Oct 10, 2019 3:08 pm

Unfortunately we find that of the first ever 5 eggs we incubated back in May, 4 of them were males.
Lovely fluffy and thriving hand reared wee chicks and so very tame.
Today one of the roosters wanted to guage my eyes out.
Guess it makes it easier getting rid of the surplus.Husband already made a stew of one.
Two more for dinner it seems.
I don't feel inclined in eating them. Feels too Hannibal Lecture

Hi Chicco,

it's often the case with winter and early spring eggs that most of the chicks turn out to be roosters. I prefer to hatch from October onwards. Maybe try again?

As to the cockerel who wanted to gauge your eyes out - that's absolutely dangerous. We would put one like that into the pot quick smart.

I have a rooster that is also heading to the pot. Biting the hand of the one feeding you is a good indication. I was recently given a patchwork hanging with a rooster on it with the words "There is a fine line between ruling the roost and a feather duster".
