Do hens of any breed have a green sheen to their feathers?

Postby adina » Wed Feb 22, 2017 8:32 pm

I have a chick (13 wks old) that was sold to me as a female barred rock, but Ive been suspicious about its sex for months and posted pics a few times asking for opinions. Responses were mixed/confused. Today I noticed a slight green sheen to the feathers on its back.
Any chance of it being a mixed breed female, or is it certainly a black sexlink male?
Thanks!

You can never get a black sex-linked male from a crossing that involves a Barred Rock. If you mate a Black Plymouth Rock with Barred Plymouth Rock females the resulting pullets will be black, the resulting cockerels will carry one copy of the barring gene. If your 13 week old chick is barred and the result of such a mating it will be male, if it is black, it will be female.

A green sheen is very desirable in black birds - both male and female.

And - btw - welcome to PC :D

My barnevelder hens have a green sheen on their black feathers. Particularly on the hackle.

I have a cockerel that has both green and purple sheen. He is part Houdan and part Araucana and has a gold overlay of head, Hackle and saddle feathers. Quite pretty.
