Deformed chick feet

Postby pullum » Fri Dec 21, 2018 2:58 pm

We've just had 10 Barred Rock chicks hatch in our incubator and 4 of them have deformed feet. Instead of toes pointing straight and spread-out they have either the toes curling inward or the whole foot curling inward. One of them is managing (toes curled inwards) but they other three (with entire foot curled) are struggling to stand or walk and not as able to eat or drink. Any suggestions please? Will the issue resolve itself or will they maybe need to be put down..:(

Hi Pullum,

there are people who make cardboard soles for their chicks and use tape to hold them in place, nicely spread out. These people say the chicks went on to live healthy lives.

I only have very limited experience with this. When I first saw one of these posts I tried it out with a couple of chicks and found that it didn't help. As soon as the cardboard and tape wore off their toes were again curled up.

You have nothing to loose by trying it out but if they can't stand because their legs are too weak I'd do the kind thing and put them out of their misery.

You can also try a vitamin and mineral supplement that contains vitamin B12 (Berocca is an easy way to get this) or Marmite or Vegiemite. You won't need much as they have tiny bodies.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
