North Holland Blue Chicks

And here they are -yey for chicks! :) :) :)

So, nhb, I just spent ages trying to get decent shots of the headspots through bars while the chicks ran around like little energiser bunnies - I totally failed!! But these were the best shots (none of which can you see all the chick's heads, and I totally lost track of who was who!). From looking at the chicks yesterday I think that 2 have much more defined headspots, 3 have fuzzy and small headspots, and the final one is kind of in between. So which way round is it - are boys the more defined headspots?

I'll try and get some better pics later....

Very cute indeed !
I think the ones with the more obvious spots on their head are supposed to be boys.

OK cool, hopefully that means 2 boys and 4 girls then. Although one of them is a bit in between so I guess it could be 3 and 3 - I'd be happy with that though too :)

I only have a small cell phone screen to look at at the moment . wolga is correct the larger dots are supposed to be the boys. Generally the girls have more of dark blue in their colouring than the boys

Some more photos of the NHB chicks on their first proper free range outing - there are two that have definite lighter feathers so I am picking them for boys. Another one is a bit weird - it was really dark but the feathers at the base of its back (and wing primaries, which you can't see here) are now coming through pale so that one might be a boy too...?

Should be able to tell by the combs soon anyway because they're 5 weeks old.

Looks like 4 girls and 2 boys. I have seen some birds with white feathers but usually on the males. They are looking like nice chicks.

Just adding some photos to continue the record of these guys growing up. Although I couldn't get many good ones of them today because the sun was a bit bright in most places.

Here they are, minus one girl who was off doing important chick things elsewhere...

For some reason this little one has never really grown proper tail feathers - she's quite bold though, so still a favourite.

And here are the two boys - nhb if you want either of these guys just let me know, they're yours if you need them but I have no idea if they are any good for breeding! :)

Apologies for the photobomber in this one - that's their 'mum' who is still mothering them at 10 weeks so I'm almost giving up hope of her going back to laying - I am fully expecting a giant moult and then that's her done for the year! This is the paler of the two (right hand side in top photo)

And the darker one (left hand side in top photo)

The pullet that had the white feathers at the base of her tail is the one that's in the middle in the top photo, so now it kind of looks like the feathers are mottled in that area.

Let me know about the boys - I can always drive out an meet you half way if that helps, but no rush to get rid of them so just whenever suits you is cool.

How are the girls laying. Did you get a few winter eggs out of them.

Yes - one of them in particular is laying great, and laid straight through since May so we didn't have to buy any eggs this winter - hurrah to that!! :)
