Take Mum away?

Postby llvonn » Mon Mar 23, 2015 6:25 pm

Heyza

This is not normally something I ask about but the mother in question is a borrowed broody. When food is put down she does cluck (even though the chicks are already hoeing into it), but the chicks are pretty much bigger than she is (she is a pekin bantam). There are four of them, two I think I have sold, one remaining is a rooster and the other I have no idea. Would it be better to integrate them with the larger chooks now, with Mum around or should I wait until later?

I would try to integrate them with mum around. However, as she is borrowed I assume she's not been part of the pecking order? So I'd watch the proceedings so that you can intervene if she gets bullied.

At this time of year hens often continue to look after their chicks for months, rather than weeks - which makes sense because they're not going to raise another lot before moulting so they might just as well look after their current brood and keep it warm.
