Looking to interview people about their chickens

Postby gradoc » Mon Jan 08, 2018 3:32 pm

Hello there,

My name is Thomas Lissington and I am a Masters student in Innovation and Commercialisation at Victoria University of Wellington.
I have kept chickens myself for more than 25 years mainly Silver-Penciled and Birchen, Pekin bantams. About half a dozen bantams stay with me in Wellington while the rest live in Marton with my parents who also keep Hyline laying hens, a Black Orpington rooster, and some ducks. My current favourite birds include a Birchen rooster called Hackles, Silver-Penciled hens named Millie, Penelope, Beyoncé, Rose, and a Birchen Hen called Flo.

Through my study I am exploring the relationships between human owners and their chickens and aim to develop and commercialise a series of modular housing products that will improve the lives of both chickens (the domestic laying hen gallus gallus domesticus) and those who take care of them. As part of this research towards my thesis I am conducting interviews with current and potential chicken owners, poultry and sustainability specialists, and related organisations.

If you are interested, I would like to meet you for an interview which should take approximately half an hour. I will provide you with a detailed information sheet and consent form prior to the interview itself. With your permission I will record the interview. If we are meeting at your property, I would like to take photographs of your backyard setup and birds. Alternatively, we could meet at a café and you could send me photographs that you have taken yourself. I will be in Christchurch from the evening of Tuesday the 23rd and flying to Auckland on the Sunday (28th) before returning to Wellington on the 2nd of February so if you living in either of those areas and are available for an interview please let me know what day and time would be most suitable for you and where you would like to meet. If you are unable to meet during these times, or live outside those areas, we may be able to arrange a different time to meet or even conduct the interview via Skype or phone.

This research has been approved by the Victoria University of Wellington’s Human Ethics Committee (Application #0000024911) and my supervisor is Dr Rachael Shaw from Victoria’s School of Biology.

You can register your interest by emailing me at my university address: thomas.lissington@vuw.ac.nz, sending me a private message or replying to this post here. If you have any questions please ask.

I look forward to meeting both you and your chickens!

Kind regards,
Thomas Lissington
I have Silver Penciled and Birchen Pekin Bantams, including "Hackles" a Birchen rooster who is adorable despite his battle-scars!
