Red Mite infestation HELP!!

Postby Marisa » Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:52 pm

Hi, I have red mites the worst I have ever seen! They are in the coop, on my chickens and they are even crawling in the grass!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

HI Marisa and welcome to PC.

Your infestation sounds really serious. The first thing I would do is remove the chickens from the coop.

You don't write how big your coop is and what it is made of or whether it is moveable. If the mites are in the grass it needs to be moved.

You either need to buy some really effective chemical or use boiling water to get rid of an infestation like that. You'll need to package all the litter into plastic bags without holes and discard it - or burn it on a fire.

Alternatively you could smother the whole coop with DE but make sure the chickens are not in it or near it.

Some people have access to a water blaster that uses hot water. This can be very effective against mites. Repeat whatever threatment you choose after 10 days before putting the chickens back in.

Your chickens will benefit from a good dusting with flea powder or similar.

Hi, thanks so much!
Ok... the coop is a trade tested wooden coop measuring 106cm x 107cm.
I cleaned them out and threw away all their bedding like I always do. I dismantle the coop floor and perching rods etc and bring them out and clean them that way. I use poultry shield and de-mite powder from Appletons.
I have ordered some rescue remedy especially for chickens that have mites aswell.
I have got some leg mite spray and when I gave it to them I gave them all a once over and couldn’t see any mites anymore.
I have also ordered some Enviroshield which is for red mite control and is safe to spray the grass with. There is still the odd mite crawling around in the grass but they are grey, not red so can’t have fed in a while!

I know these trade tested coops. They are small enough to turn them upside down and run some boiling water along the joints.

The products you are using all take a bit of time to work so they'll solve your problem. They'll also make sure no new population will get out of hand. However, with the severity of infestion you described an instant hit like boiling water which kills all stages of the mites is very effective.
