Can you give a bit more info, please?

I don't know what standard mites are.

The ones I know live in the cracks and crevices of the hen house. They are grey-ish brown before drinking blood and red after drinking blood. They are about the size of a pin head or smaller.

Where did you see your mites? In the hen house, on the chooks, in the nest? How big are they?

yes, those mites...

jave read about rubbing vaseline over the end of their perches...

and spraying the birds with a product called Frontline.

mites on birds and in house

cleaned out house, allowed it to dry, applied diatomaceous earth... allowed 48 hours before i let the chooks back in...

but when i stroke the birds i get the mites jumping on me... so was thinking of trying Frontline spray... want something that works

thanks

That sounds like a serious infestation. Do your birds lay? If not you could terat them with ivermectin or cydectin. It's systemic so all mites that suck blood will die but you can't eat their eggs if you do this.

Vaseline on perches is a bit of a lost cause if the infestation is serious. Some mites also are resistant to insecticides.

I use EcoSmart fly spray to spray the mite colonies - they suffocate as the spray is oily. Do not spray on birds.

Did you clean out their litter? Sometimes the mites live in the litter. Please do a search on cydectin or ivermectin on this forum to find out more. There is heaps about mites and resistant mites.

Frontline is a product used to break the flea cycle in cats and dogs, so it's likely to be off label. Check with your vet on how to use it for poultry.
Negavon and ripcord ( you need to take precautions spraying ripcord in a closed area) are both effective as a coop spray against mites and Kiwicare put out a mite spray that is safer to use
