Chicken with 1 swollen ankle

Postby Jules44 » Thu Oct 20, 2016 10:36 am

Hi ya I have 3 barnevelders and one of them I have noticed this morning that she has a swollen ankle, she is walking a little tentatively in it but she is laying still and eating fine. I haven't come across this before and have checked her over and no signs of mites or anything like that, can anyone help?

yeah, I'd like to know the answer to that - we've had ducks show up with a swollen leg/bad limp from time to time
they free range and we've got wild cats on the property, I'm starting to wonder if there's a connection

With ducks if they are flying, perhaps a heavy landing. Hens also may land heavily off the perch, but check the underside of her feet in case she has the beginnings of bumble foot. That often starts with a bruise to the pad under the foot but can also begin with a small cut or puncture wound that lets a staph infection in. Check for any heat in the joint.

Thanks for that, what is the best remedy for that or should a vet visit be in store for her?

If it's bumblefoot it looks like this:

I only treat if the bird is limping - often these things sort themselves out without my 'help'.
