Hen with severely swollen head around eyes

Postby littleblessingsnz » Sun Mar 30, 2014 4:57 pm

Hi, I have a Pekin bantam, approx 2 years old who over the past couple of weeks has developed a severely swollen head, in particular around the eyes. She has lost feathers on her head and on the top of her head by her comb where it became swollen there has been some bleeding but until today it has been scabbed over. This afternoon I noticed it was bleeding and so I've put her into a rabbit hutch on her own with some goodies to eat.

She has been eating, drinking and free ranging happily with the rest of the girls (although when I found her bleeding this afternoon she was perching in the coop).

I have not seen any discharge or weeping around the eyes or nose, no sneezing or wheezing but she has been shaking her head and scratching her head a lot. I have put lice powder on her.

I think she has been losing weight slowly too.

Any ideas of what might be the problem?

Hi Littleblessings,

I agree that a photo would help but from what you describe it doesn't sound good.

The swelling, bleeding and scratching could well point to a tumor. Most animals (and humans, too), behave completely normal despite active tumor growth, at least at the initial stage of the disease.

I've heard of many younger birds who have had tumors, I had a few myself. There probably is nothing you can do to make it go away so what you are doing is just fine.

Observe her and if the bleeding re-occurs it's probably time to put her out of her misery.

Sounds like Fowl Pox to me which is caused by mosquitos. The head and wattles will scab and the head can become quite swollen and the eyes can be scabbed shut. Keep the scabs moist with Rawleighs Salve or some other moisturising anteseptic cream which will help soften the scabs and stop them ripping and bleeding (even straight vasceling will help make the area flezible). It lasts about 3 weeks all up, then the bird is immune for life. The scabs can be infectious so it pays to isolate the bird if you can.

99's take on the problem makes sense - please disregard what I thought it might be.

I don't think it is mosquitos as wouldn't there be multiple scabs?. Her head became very swollen and it was a couple of weeks later that a bleeding/scabbed area appeared. This split open again on the weekend but has scabbed over again now. There is only the one scab area and her eyes are not scabbed, still open. Something to consider though. We don't have a lot of mosquitos around here (Christchurch). She is back in the main coop but stayed inside yesterday and is inside again today.

I just got some photos. She was happy enough out of the coop and went off to free range with the other girls. One of her eyes does seem to have a wee bit of gunk in it. And she does seem to have other scabs so maybe it is mosquito bites...

The last photo shows the swelling the best an the bleeding bit is on the other side of her comb, I just couldn't get a good shot.

Very informative photos - thanks for posting.

I've never seen anything like this. Fowl pox is mainly spread by mosquitoes so it's not their bite but the fowl pox lesions. Fowl pox is rare here in Canterbury but this spring there have been cases just north of Christchurch - there were photos posted on fb.

What your hen has looks nothing like fowl pox. I don't know what it could be but it looks very serious. The lighter colour of the swollen areas could indicate a lack of blood flow. Do they feel hard or puffy? If they feel hard I think you have to consider that it could be a tumor.

If it were an infection the swollen areas would be bright red and hot to the touch.

I haven't had much sickness in my birds over the years (touch wood) so am not that experienced with diagnosis but doesn't infectious coryza cause the head to swell?

I had never heard of this disease - scary!

Oh dear, she does look sorry for herself :(

And I've never heard of infectious coryza either, so thanks for posting the photos so I'll have an idea if I ever see anything similar.

It's NZ Poultry Chat but you won't find those pictures anymore as it was half a year ago. It's difficult to find something that's a week old as it's not indexed like here on PoultryCentral.

Just came back to this post - in the end both eyes became completely swollen shut so I had to euthanise her not long after I posted this thread. I don't know what it was and none of my other chickens were affected.
