Vets who treat chickens

Postby Lindeggs » Wed Feb 02, 2011 3:06 pm

I'm about to get my new chicks so decided to locate local vets who treat chickens. I thought it might be helpful to compile a list here for future reference. Most of the vets I called said they do not treat poultry but I was very fortunate to find two in my area who do.

1) Lynfield Vet Clinic, 122 White Swan Road, Lynfield, Auckland. (09) 626 4335 http://www.vetsforpets.co.nz

2) Mt Albert Veterinary Hospital, 1127 New North Road, Mt Albert, Auckland. (09) 828 4031 http://www.mavets.co.nz (Note: This is the website address they give in their Yellow Pages ad but it doesn't seem to be working...)

That's just great. Thanks for sharing that we have quite a few members in the Auckland area, and I'm sure future Aucklanders will find this helpful too!

Hopefully other members will also post contact details here, for vets who treat chickens in other parts of the country. It would be nice to have a ready-reference in case of emergency.

Dawn Mills at the New Plymouth Vet Group is an avian specialist, I go to her quite often for my birds. She will even do surgeries! :D

For those who live in the Wellington area, there is Christine at Taita PetVet and Louise at the Wainuiomata Vet.
I recently had 2 very sick chicken who in the end had to be put down but Christine was very helpful and even did a postmortem for free (not including the drug to put the chicken down or the disposal of the body). She was very interested in our case and had a natural ability at handling our bird. I highly recomend her.

I took one of my pullets to the Mt Albert Vet clinic recently (contact details in first post). The vet did a very thorough checkup and the treatment for her respiratory infection was successful, so that's a good outcome for me. I would recommend them.

Neil Christensen in Palmerston North is an Avain Specialist, http://www.avivet.co.nz/ and he is brilliant apparently. There is a second avain specialist in NZ somewhere but his name escapes me at the moment.

Vet Bryan Gartrell, is absolutely marvellous with chickens. I wish I lived closer to him, otherwise I have to wait once a year when he comes to KeriKeri.

hi there. I am new to chicken keeping and was wondering if there is a list / site anywhere that lists vets and which ones deal with chickens. Thankfully I don't need a vet at the moment but should the need arise it would be good to know which vets deal with poultry etc in any particular area as I understand not all vets do. I wouldn't want to have to spend too much time ringing round to find out. I live in Berkshire, near Reading.
