Hi Maddie, first of all I would say get yourself a new vet. If they laugh at you when you bring a sick animal for treatment they really aren't much help. :|

Wirth the rooster, it could be one of many things making him guirgle and sneeze. The most likely is a respiratory infection. He is likely to need a course of broad-spectrum antibiotics. The type of antibiotic and the dosage needs to be advised by a vet. I wonder if someone can recommend a decent vet in Dunedin?

Garlic and apple cider vinegar (ACV) are both good general tonics but are not medication. If he was just sneezing I would agree with this suggestion. But once he is gurgling it's likely the initial virus has become a secondary bacterial infection in his lungs which is why antibiotics may help.

The garlic and ACV won't do any harm and may help him. Also keep an eye on him for worsening symptoms, and keep him warm and quiet. Make sure he is eating and especially drinking. Is he doing all these things at the moment? Is he standing up tall, crowing, staying active and paying attention to the hens?

My Light Sussex pullet had symptoms like this. The vet took her temperature, looked down her throat for signs of infection, listened to her breathing with a stethoscope, gave her a full physical inspection and weighed her to guage her general health. These are all things I would expect from a vet, even if they weren't an avian specialist.

P.S. I'm going to be out of town (away from a computer) for a few days so i won't be able to help track his progress. I hope he gets well soon, and hopefully other helpful people on here will be able to offer you some advice. :)

i have some progress with my king george (rooster) mixed a teaspooon of garlic and a table spoon of cod liver oil in this mash and been doing that since i was told to try that, but he still has a slight gurgle and keeps opening and closing his mouth,he's drinking well eating like anything, standing straight ,he's very hard to keep quiet lol but have him away from the girls, nice and warm.been told about a vet this evening in dunedin that specializes in chickens so good news in that department.

your vet is a jerk
most vets in NZ only get one or two days worth of bird training but none should turn away any animal in need
I wonder if your bird has something stuck in his throat like a long piece of grass? that's not uncommon and it needs sorting out or it can cause a serious infection

I know this is a pretty old post - but any chance you could advise regarding the vet you found in Dunedin with some expertise with chickens?
Cheers
