Hen with Diarrhea for a while

Postby kiwilass » Thu Nov 07, 2019 4:02 pm

Hi, one of my hens has had the runs for a while now. I have tried natural Yoghurt for a week or so, which she likes. Have put apple sider vinegar in their water, and have been cleaning her vent area with wet wipes. Its still the same. She is not doing a lot, but it smells. She is getting the same food, etc as the other hens.
Emma is about 7 years old, and was a rescue chook when she was about 18 months old. The only one of 3 we got to look after that lived this long.
Cannot afford to go to vet at this time. Is there any other thing I could try to make her poo more solid.
Thanks for any help. :(

7 years is a good innings for a hen! Looks like you have looked after her really well.

You have tried the yoghurt and apple cider vinegar which is great. Pity she isn't any better.

The only other thing you could try is to give her wheat only - no pellets. You could even soak the wheat in a bit of apple cider vinegar mixed with a lot of water.

One other possibility is that she has picked up a virus but that will have to run its course - a vet visit won't help.

If it is bacterial antibiotics may help but the apple cider vinegar usually helps dealing with this.

Colloidial Silver is a natural bacterial killer which you could try. Colloidial silver is available from some pharmacies or online:

But to be honest with you - it could be so many things, could be fungal, too. And she's an old girl, her immune system won't be the best, so whatever you decide will be a good option for her and there is nothing wrong with letting nature take its course.

Hi,thanks for that marina.
I have noticed that her vent is protruding out. If you get me. Does that mean anything?
I will try the wheat and vinegar and water... can't make it any worse…..

Sounds like she's got a prolapse whcih is nothing unusual in an older hen who's laid hundreds of eggs. I'd just keep her comfortable and see how she goes.

Got up this morning to let my old battery hen out and she was sitting down in the nest. Brought her inside and put in box as she can't walk. I think it won't be long now..... :(
