Gold laced Orpingtons

Postby tishie11 » Fri May 20, 2016 11:35 am

I seem to have accidentally created a line of Orpingtons (only roosters so far) that are gold/buff and with a lot of lacing mainly on their chests. I am assuming these originated from my one buff hen and my blue rooster (a lot of brown in him). The boys start being mainly buff/gold/brown and as they grow they develop the lacing over their chests and under fluff. So I am holding onto my current 4 excess roosters as they are all developing this lacing, just to see how far it goes. These boys are about 4-5 months old.
Any experts out there who can explain this?

They look interesting, Tishie!

Blue Orpingtons are supposed to be laced so that's the likely source of the lacing gene(s). It's that darker rim around the blue feathers.

From a Blue Orp the offspring inherit either the black or the splash and the cockerels in your pictures have inherited the black. Combine this with buff and this could explain what you have got.

To go any further with developing the lacing you'd ideally need a female with the same looks and mate her to the cockerel with the more clearly defined lacing. Among the offspring should be a few where the lacing genes combine to make better defined lacing. However, you'll get a lot of offspring who are no better than their parents and some who have no lacing at all.

looks like you're on your way to laced Orpys!
you may have to breed the laced boy back to his daughter, to try to bring out any lacing in a hen, if you don't have any so far
lots of hatching, feeding & housing developing a new colour!

An up to date photo of my most laced boy - the lacing seems to go underneath as well as he gets older. Unfortunately he is getting very hormonal now and "on guard" when I am around him - seems to be protecting the other roos as well! Hope he isn't going to get nasty........

It will be very interesting to see what colour his chicks will be. Are you planning to put him with your buff hens ?

Yes I am wolga. I am keeping that boy but I have sold the other laced boy.
When I come back from overseas I'll have to make another pen for that purpose and try hatching out some of the buffs eggs - hopefully will get some more laced including some hens this time. The buff hen is the key to the operation apparently!
