youre right to be confused, as this shouldn't happen.
best answer is that one of the parents is infact a blue rather than lavender.

what you have to remember is that lavender dilutes everything that is there, (gold and black)
so lavender araucanas are genetically speaking, black birds that have been diluted with lavender

Coronation sussex are lavender diluted light sussex (the black on the light sussex has been turned lavender, and the white parts -remain white). So this happens when lavender is involved

No idea what you'd call the colour of hen you describe, but I assume splash is the same as in other breeds, ie white with flecks of black on some feathers (see photos below from feathersite http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGA/ ... KAmer.html)
