Help Identifying Breed

Postby Ward » Fri Mar 09, 2018 5:53 pm

Hello all first time actually posting on this forum,
We have been chicken keepers for around 3 years now and have been to our fair share of auctions and shows by now but haven't yet been able to put a breed to our original 3 birds.
We purchased them all together from a gentleman and was told that they were all from the same clutch of eggs, although they have different colouring's they all act and sound almost identical. The closest breed we could find was that of marans but were shocked to find that marans don't exist in New zealand, we would really like to get a few more of these girls as they have massive personalities and our original 3 are getting quite old. Any help identifying a breed is appreciated.
Thanks Ben.

Hi Ward and welcome to PC.

You have 3 lovely girls there and most chickens are barnyard specials. They definitely aren't one of the breeds we have here in New Zealand and they aren't Marans, either. There is nothing wrong with barnyard specials. They often are better layers than many of the pure breds and reading your post you seem to enjoy having them.

If you'd like new ones that are similar to what you have got you might like to try Andalusians or Hamburgs - or a cross that incorporates one of these breeds.
