Unexpected happening this morning

Postby GillyJ » Wed Aug 01, 2012 6:32 pm

7.30 am I was outside on my deck having my cuppa and watching Daisy my Shelduck swimming in her pool and I heard some honking, and 2 wild shelduck were flying overhead. Daisy saw them and started calling - not sure if she was shouting at them or calling them and they circled around and around our house and eventually flew in - well, the female shelduck flew in first. Highly unusual as we are have large trees about and a pocket-size lawn. The female eyed up Daisy - both of them were hollering at one another and then the male flew in and went for Daisy. The noise was something else! :)
But when the male went for Daisy I intervened and chased them both off. A few times throughout the day, I hear my Daisy shouting and see these 2 wild ones overhead. I hope I'm not going to end up with a colony of Shelducks in my garden and traipsing through the house :D

Sounds intriguing. The wild ducks seem to have something to say to your duck. Did your girl call the lady wild duck names perhaps as they were doing a fly by? Or maybe Daisy was flirting with Mr wild duck and his wife came down to give Daisy a good quacking!!!!
In seriousness, it would be interesting knowing why the wild ducks came for a noisy visit.

I think the wild female was curious about my duck's calling... it was her who insisted on flying in. The reluctantly the male flew in cos I guess he was protecting his female and when Daisy and wild female were eyeing one another up, the male decided to attack Daisy. I don't know Louise - I wish I knew more about them and their courting habits etc.
Not much on the internet about them. :)

I think it is me that Daisy wants as her mate actually :) She wants to be stroked constantly, sits down on my feet and chases anybody and anything that comes near me, away - especially my hubby! And if shut out, paces and shouts for the ranchslider to be opened :) :)
